If you are on an elevator and there is one person or a crowd of people behind you and you press the door close button, then chances are that you're an ass.
It's true. There is no escaping it. At the very least, you have ass tendencies. Meaning, you may be a good person, but not really.
One thing that you may not be aware of is people know you as that guy/girl who always rushes to the elevator to close the door in everyone's face. Come on. We SEE you closing the door on us. Everyday we see you pick up your step a little bit, trying not to look back, pressing the button, and closing the door on everyone. It is the opposite of a good thing to do.
Contrary to your belief, pressing the close door button is not the same as simply not holding the door open for anyone (also an ass thing to do, but I digress). No, it's the same as slamming the door in someone's face. The reason is because it's deliberate. It's not something that you accidentally do. It's an intentionally selfish action.
Before getting on the elevator a GOOD PERSON looks back to see if there is anyone behind them. If anyone is in their line of sight and appears to be approaching, they hold the door.
A GOOD PERSON may even simply walk into the elevator without looking back; however, with the understanding that someone maybe behind them, they do NOT press the close door button.
A BAD PERSON rushes to the elevator without looking back so that they have more opportunity to close the door on people who may be walking a little slower than them.
A HORRIBLE PERSON rushes to the elevator knowing that people are only steps away and still closes the door on them.
Which one are you?
One last thing: The close door button is for when the doors are not closing. If you get on an elevator, wait the 4 seconds it takes for the doors to close behind you. If you're in a hurry to get somewhere, pressing that button will not make a difference. Chill out and be nice.
*This posting is dedicated to the woman that rides the Path Train to Exchange Place at approximately 6:10am every morning and, without fail, closes the elevator door on the 10 people that are only 5 steps behind you. I sincerely hope that you realize how selfish you're being and change your ways someday.

Tonight I saw an AMAZING film called, "Boy". I encourage you all to see it. It was near perfect. Funny, touching, dramatic, just an all around damn good movie. I hope to create something this wonderful before I clock out.

Congrats on paying off your student loans, big guy! I know we haven't seen each other in a while and for that I apologize. Things have been crazy lately. But, I couldn't miss the chance to send you much love on getting that Student Loan Monkey off your back. Remember that time, during the Civil Rights Movement, when we shared that jail cell together and you put your hand on my shoulder and said, "You got this, Marty!" It gave me the strength to carry on. That meant a lot to me and this means a lot to me, too.

As one of the best comedy writers in the industry, I know a little something about achievement. I know what it means to be praised for a job well done and what it means to bask in a bit of glory, as it were. The fact is, that nothing I have or will ever achieve will measure up to the feat that you have accomplished in paying off your student loans. Everything I have done to now is ballocks compared to you making that last payment. I may even quit the industry. I don't know. I haven't decided yet.
In any case, congratulations. You are a great inspiration to all of us and you and I know that The Office would have been nothing without your guidance and unwavering support.

I remember the day you got your first student loan bill. You opened that envelope, saw the balance, and then you cried out my name in smite. I was hurt, but I understood and forgive you now. There were nights when you had to eat cereal for dinner because of this burden. The necessary burden of education. The necessary burden of adulthood. The necessary burden of pain. For without pain we cannot grow strong.
Sure, I could just GIVE you strength, but where's the fun in that? There's no lesson there. Life wouldn't be as entertaining to live (and to watch....lol). But no, seriously. You paying off your student loans isn't a new thing. People finish paying off their student loans everyday. There's no real prize for it. Chances are that by the time you get this letter you will have accumulated some other type of debt and will need to pay that off. Then you will smite my name again.
At the end of the day, the world is a world of payment. You pay your dues. You pay your taxes. You pay the piper. You pay your respects. It doesn't end until the end, so shut up and smile.
